Yobe Light - The story behind the light

Every summer, our family would gather at a country house in the Luberon to slow down and spend time together.

We played cards, visited the market and cooked with local ingredients: olive oil, peaches, tomatoes, aubergines and Mediterranean fish, under the sun to the sound of cicadas.

We sat around long tables, half in shade and half in sunlight beneath the century-old oak tree surrounded by olive trees. One evening, with a plancha dinner and Provence rosé on the menu, the weather turned cloudy and the temperature dropped, so we moved into the barn.

Thunder rumbled, followed by an enormous crash! Lightning struck nearby and we lost our only light.

For a moment, everything stood still. Silence. We switched on our phone flashlights, placed one on the table and, just for fun, set a bottle on top. The beam of light grew stronger, and the light returned as if by magic.

Through refraction, the rays spread out, multiplying the angles and reflections and casting rippling pink patterns across the table. Everyone joined in with their own experiment. What a moment!

We were fascinated. Every evening, we repeated the experiment with different containers: rounded decanters, vases, water glasses and bottles of white or rosé wine. With each container, its size, shape and contents changed the way the light travelled, magically creating different atmospheres, sometimes bright and white, sometimes warm, soft or intimate.
